Last weekend I had yet another opportunity to second shoot Aaron Wilcox. I’m sure I have said this before but I will say it again, I love to second shoot at weddings. I try and shoot stuff a little different then I would normally shoot and try new stuff. Some times it works and sometimes it doesn’t.

La Valencia is a gorgeous hotel in the heart of the fancy, and pricey, La Jolla. It is a place I often drive by and never go in because I’m not worthy of its awesomeness. This wedding got me in the door and now I know what people are talking about when they speak of La Valencia.

When I am second I try to spin off the first shooter. If he is tight, I go wide; if he is shooting from one side, I will shoot form the other. Well this wedding I shot a lot of reflections. I like reflections in general but this place was filled with them, so you will see a few more then normal on this post. Congrats Jeanie and Brian for a fabulous wedding and a good time.

This is our bulldog DUG, we have had him for a week now and has brought us more joy then we could ever imagine! We have taken him pretty much everywhere we possibly can and sometimes getting kicked out but well worth it. So enjoy his week 1 video :)

So the day has come when we got our new puppy. His name is Dug. He is 7 1/2 weeks old and a bundle of joy that waddles when he walks. He snores when he sleeps and doesn't know how to bark, its more of a squeak. Dug is very curious and likes pretty much everyone he meets except when they scream at his cuteness.

These are some photos i have taken in the last 2 days. He is a big crazy head and a big sleeper. Enjoy his cuteness (and its ok to scream, he cant hear you).

For you that don’t know my wife, she is a second grade teacher and the best one at that. Since I see her everyday, I know how hard she works and how much she loves her kids.

With my schedule, I get to come down to her class and help out. I always feel like a super star cause as soon as I walk in the class erupts- "MR. MAYER!!!!" what a great confidence booster.

I went down to Kelli's class three times last week to help out on the grading and various other task but I got to experience second grade book reports. Let me tell you, they are awesome. This book report was on a biography of someone famous. One of the students was Neil Armstrong and the student put their helmet on Kelli. What a moment. I never had a teacher come down to my level and make me laugh like Kelli does with her students.

I also took some photos for one of Kelli's art project for the class. Here are just a few pics of kids...

I had another opportunity to second shoot Bobby Earle :)

I really enjoy second shooting cause I get to try a lot of things or work on other things I normally wouldn’t have the chance to do if they where my own client. The bummer part is that I never really get to know the couple, which is what I enjoy most about being a wedding photographer. Not in this case. For the short time, I got to know them I got to see the love for each other. There was nothing flashy about this wedding but good old fashion, down and dirty, infatuation.

Today was the 1-year anniversary from my kidney surgery...

This is my second most favorite day of my life, weird, I know. My favorite day is my wedding, obviously. But this was the day I felt the true meaning of marriage. This is where "in sickness and in health" came into play. If you know anything about Kelli, you know that she hates blood and won't do anything with medical stuff. Well... that all changed a year ago. After getting my kidney fixed and my internal plumbing reworked, I had some baggage, literally. For three months I had tube coming out of my side that was attached to my kidney on the inside and a bag on the outside. As I drank fluids, the bag filled up with urine and blood (gross to the max) and I was unable to empty it myself for a few weeks because I couldn’t bend over and reach the release valve. Kelli was there for my every need, gross as it may be. Blah blah blah, the whole reason for this post is to share how much I love my wife and how awesome she really is!

So today was a pretty fun day. I hung out with a fellow wedding photographer, Aaron Wilcox and his 2 year old son Riley. I brought my real camera to snap some photos but decided to leave it in the car and just use my iphone. Santa put a itunes gift card for 15 smackers in my stocking and it was burning a hole in my pocket, so I bought some apps for the iphone to make fun photos. So I was killing time today on Surfline and was peeking at the various surf photographer's portfolios that they feature on the site. I saw the first photo and thought to myself that looks really familiar, holy smokes... I’m in that photo! Well, actually the back of my head is in that photo. I was the whitest guy for 1000 miles and was covering my back with a towel trying not to get burnt from the Tahitian sun. I was able to recognize the photo because I had one that was very similar to it. The second image below is the image I got from my boat. The rest are some of my favs from my little trip to the southern hemisphere.

What a way to start off the New Year!!!!

I had the awesome opportunity to photograph my cousin Katie’s wedding in San Francisco. Normally I don’t like to shoot relatives’ or friend’s weddings because it can be tough, but this one didn’t feel like work.

This wedding was like no other… For one thing, it was on time- to the minute. Another thing is that they actually got married in August- so they had already been married for a few months. Let me elaborate. Thad is really smart and works on the other side of the world, but Katie is also really smart and she didn’t want her man leaving without her so they did a little civil marriage a few months ago. If you know anything about Katie, you know that she isn’t one to settle for a civil marriage so she, with the help of many others, planned this gorgeous wedding from the other side of the globe.

One of the things that made this wedding so amazing was the attention to detail. Katie and Thad (more so Katie) have their own and taste and it was apparent in every nook and cranny. You could really tell that this was no ordinary wedding because of how much love from family and friends was put into this wedding.

The wedding itself wasn’t MY favorite part… it was actually the day after. Kelli (who started her photography career) and I went over to my aunt and uncle’s house to share a slideshow of a 130+ images with the family along with the new (kinda) married couple. As we all sat around watching the photos fade in and out, I noticed my cousin crying. After the show, I asked why she was crying and she said after all is said and done those photos are all there is to remember the day and that those memories are irreplaceable. That is why I love my job.

So the time has come to where I needed new business cards. I have had this crazy idea to not put any obvious text on the card but to do it in a sneaky way. There is this thing called spot UV that only shows up with at a certain angle. This is a photo of the top of the card and it’s the side with the spot UV. It's there but you can't really tell without me telling you or if you just happen to catch it earlier.

Moller family

On Tuesday I had the opportunity to photograph the super cute Moller family. I was pretty excited because I usually don't get the chance to photograph families... only couples. For some reason I was really nervous. I think I got nervous because kids are so cute and people have expectations. I get scared of expectations. I like to work with what I got with a free mind and let the moments happen- let the kids be kids and snap away.

While we were shooting, it got really cold. The poor little kids were shivering to the point where we couldn't shoot anymore. Luckily, I had a fleece blanket in the car because Kelli likes to snuggle up in the car whenever we go anywhere. Anyways, this was my favorite photo from the day. It just makes me happy. It's a nice tender moment.

I have been looking forward to this wedding for a long time. After shooting their engagement session I knew that this wedding was going to be easy breezy. Trust is a huge component when it comes to a photographer and the couple. Brett and Jenae trusted me more then any other couple I have had to date... I think. I tried some different things, from a photography point of view, that I wouldn't have normally had the chance to do if they didn’t feel comfortable with my off the wall ideas.

Back to this awesome day.... It was cold, not the coldest I've shot, but the wind coming off the water felt like it went straight to the bone. I don’t think there was one person there that didn’t have goose bumps during the family photos, yet everyone was in a cheerful mood. That is what made this wedding fun- the people. I hope I did this wedding justice because these people were AWESOME.

WOO WHO!!!!

I had the opportunity to second shoot the awesome photographer Aaron Wilcox for a wedding in San Clemente. It's really funny because we were so different, but yet so similar. I always stick my hand in the light to check to see if it was soft or hard and what direction it was coming. I use the palm side of my hand and Aaron did the same thing but on the back of his hand. Most IMPORTANTLY- he shoots Nikon and I shoot Canon, not really the most important but the battle goes on :)

The most important thing is that our visions were on same path. It was really nice because we didn't have to say anything to each other during the wedding. It was like, eye contact= BAM= we both know what we are doing, and not doing the same thing, which equals awesomeness.

well, the couple was way awesome and were fantastic to photograph. I am not going to lie, I really enjoyed shooting them and shooting with Aaron.

So I work a lot with a photographer in OC name Mike Medby and I usually assist him on the photo shoots for Asics. Mike asked me to assist on this shoot but I couldn't commit to assisting because I had my own photo shoot in the afternoon so I took Buzz up to meet the Asics and photo crew.

Holy smokes, he was a HIT! They practically ripped Buzz out of my hands and stuck him in the shot. He behaved so stinking well. He just sat there and looked as cute as possible.

This is Buzz's last photo shoot. Kelli and I took him to the hospital that night and you know the rest.....

I never seen someone smile as much as Carolann did on her wedding day. I shot their engagement session and thought I knew what I was getting myself into. I was way off. This wedding was a 2 day event with 2 receptions. The first day had the ceremony and a larger reception followed by a friends reception at a friends house. Of course no wedding goes smoothly or as planned, and they unfortunately had an issue with the DJ for their first reception. The DJ didn't turn in his insurance to the venue and they didn't allow him to set up so there was no music, which meant to dancing. So to make it up, the DJ did the second reception and everyone danced their hearts out. so its all good. I always tell my brides to not worry about the little things during their wedding day cause they get married no matter what, music playing or not. Carolann and Chris did it right, not a care in the world but so in love with each other.

Buzz: to infinity and beyond

This is the hardest post and one I thought I wouldn’t have to do for a very long time. Last Friday night we rushed Buzz to the emergency Vet because Buzz wasn’t being himself and threw up twice earlier in the day. After getting to see the x-rays of Buzz's stomach, we knew it was going to be an uphill battle. We figured out that Buzz got into our friend's dog food that was super packed with fiber and it clogged his digestive tract. He ate so much that it was putting pressure on his little diaphragm and making hard for him to breathe. So we left him over night to get some enemas and clear out his system of all the food he ate. We thought that would be it but as it turned out when he vomited he inhaled some into his lungs causing him to get aspiration pneumonia and then it was all downhill from there. His little body did the best it could and tripled his white blood cell count to fight the infection. The vets gave him as many drugs as they could to help him out but it turned out to be too much.

His last day was the toughest. Buzz was in an oxygen tank and struggling for every little breath he could get. We left that morning with plans to come back at night but God had other plans. As we were down at Kelli’s work to get her substitute teacher plans ready, cause she wasn’t planning on going in due to Buzz’s condition, we got the call from the Vet that we were not expecting. Buzz stopped breathing. It was like my heart fell out of my chest and there was nothing we could do.

We drove up from Mira Mesa to San Marcos in record time to something we never wanted to go to. Knowing inside it wouldn’t make a difference, we gave it our best to see him one more time before his time was up. We didn’t make it in time. We walked into the Vet’s as they were wheeling him on the cart into a room so we could say our goodbyes. That was the toughest cause our little buzz wasn’t himself anymore, it was just his earthly body and not his joyful bouncy spirit which everyone loved him for. It was as if life was going so slow as I petted him and felt his little paws. I eventually lifted him off his metal bed and took him in my arms and sat on the sofa. It was so strange to feel a cold stiff body that was once warm and kissing me every chance he got. Fortunately, Kelli, my mom and James were there alongside me to comfort and console me but I still felt alone without my best four-legged friend there.

We went home after that and cried as we saw all his toys on the ground and collar on the counter sitting there as if it too was waiting for Buzz to come home. Holding his little stuffed bulldog and his collar, Kelli and cried ourselves to sleep till the afternoon. Knowing we weren’t going to be able to sleep in our own house for the night we went to our friends Debra and James’ house and slept on their floor. Sleeping that night was really tough and I dreamt of Buzz being Buzz only to be woken up by Debra yelling at me that she is pregnant. It is funny how God takes and gives.

So I made this video/slideshow of Buzz growing up. Its pretty close to his timeline give or take a few days here and there but it’s fun to see him grow up and become the Bulldog that stole everyone’s hearts. I ended the video with my favorite clip of Buzz where he is driving my car.

Thank you so much to the people that loved him as much as we did, or at least tried to love him as much as we did. Thank you for your love and prayers. Thank you Lord, for allowing us to be blessed by your little angel.

If dogs went to Heaven....

Dog beach is Buzz's playground.

We went with our friends Deb and James to dog beach with their bulldog Gracie. Gracie took off like a horse running the Kentucky Derby and buzz did the more casual trot to see the other dogs cruising the beach. Being a bulldog owner, we try to find other bulldogs and make a cool club that only bulldogs can play in and we found Moose. Moose was 11 months and built like a tank. When i mean tank, I am talking 65lbs of solid muscle and full of manlyness. He was a huge ball of energy and still has 7 months to grow, YIKES!!!!! well Buzz was fearless and played with Moose like he was 65lbs not caring as he dodged, dove, dipped, ducked... and dodged. He snuck a few bunches and kicks in between Moose's attempts to show Buzz who was boss.

Eventually Buzz made it the water. Bulldogs are not known for their water skills but Buzz took it like a champ. He started slow then walked all the way up the the chin. He does this really funny thing when he gets in the water and lifts one of his front paws out of the water as if not to get it wet. Hopefully we can get him a life jacket and get him surfing soon and be the Kelly slater of Bulldogs. that will have to be another posting in the future :)

Dia de los Muertos

I came across this event while grabbing a bite to eat in Oceanside the other week and thought it would be super fun. Dia de los Muertos was really fun to shoot and was a learning experience because I am just not the familiar with Mexican traditions.

I went to get one shot and was super stoked when I got it. I really wanted a photo of the lady in white with the full face makeup. She is part of a dance they do for their holiday, I wish I could give you more info but I don't want to lead you astray and give you the wrong info so here is the video of the dance form last year (click). Super fun!

Halloween time!!!!

This was the best Halloween yet!!!!! Kelli and I usually don't do anything for Halloween but this year we co-hosted a party at our friends Deb and Jame's house and we rocked it out! we did a little rock band, which I'm terrible at, and a little ping pong and a photo booth. here are the pics from that an one extra for dessert.

Here he is again!!!!!!

I took Buzz on a little exploration trip into a grove of eucalyptus trees and he was in HEAVEN. This little guy loves twigs, sticks and leaves and this place was filled with them. He was so stinking funny running around cause he would get a mouth full of twigs then drop them and get another mouth full of twigs 5 inches to the left of him, I guess grass is greener on the other side. Being in he is own little dream world, he was barking for no apparent reason and running in circles chasing the leaves falling from trees due to the windy day. He was a little kid in a candy shop.

Niveen and Michael

Better late then never...

I shot this wedding a few weeks ago and life has just been too crazy and i totally forgot....oops. well anyways, I had the opportunity to second shoot east coast big hitter, Glen Cooper. He was super dooper nice and let me do whatever the quack I wanted. It was like being the primary with no worries :)

This wedding was too stinking fun. Niveen is from Pakistan and Michael is from Santa Barbara, the twist on this wedding was it was their second one. Their first wedding was in January in Boston all decked out in Pakistani wear and tradition. This wedding was their second and a little more Americanized (I think that is a real word). The ceremony was "normal" but Niveen still wore her traditional dress. her dress was my favorite. It is different from their first wedding but hand made by the same person from Pakistan. Each dress takes 1-2 months of crazy skills.... AMAZING!!!!! I would love to shoot more of these weddings. Anytime, anywhere!

halloween prep

hahahahahah halloween time is coming!

Kelli and I are pretty darn excited for halloween this year for a few reasons. One because Buzz is going to dress up with us, and we have friends to spend the time with us. You cant have halloween without pumpkins so we each got one and did our best to create our little jack-o-lanterns. Unfortunately, all the pumpkin patches close a 9:00 so we had to go to Vons which actually had a pretty darn good selection, minus the one or two rotten ones that were stuck on the bottom.

Our friend Debra has never carved a pumpkin before. Weird, I know. I think she has been living in a cave for the last 20yrs. Anyways, we all had a great time and made some awesome pumps!

I did Jack form Nightmare before Christmas; Kelli did Mike from Monster's Inc; Debra did Minnie mouse, and James did a classic Jack-o-lantern :)

I went to Brooks Institute of Photography to pursue my dream of taking photos, and taking them well- I should say they gives the means to be successful. Anywho, I have done numerous assignments with numerous subjects, which led to numerous photos.

I randomly came across this image on one of my hard drives from my stock class with Rick Rickman. I had to redo this assignment cause I totally missed the point, but I came out with this image. It’s not an amazing image but it has numerous memories with me. So what I did to get this image was I used my Magic Arm to put my 1D mark II with a fish eye lens on and triggered it wirelessly so I could take a bunch of photos as I bomb hills. Well, this image is what it looks like right before my Magic Arm gave way and decided to drag my camera along the street like it was toy. My camera handled it like a champ.

I like this particular image just because of the swirl the motion made on the right side of the frame. It just caught my eye and made me spend time to at it longer, which deserves a little blog post J

buzz got his learner's permit

So today Buzz and I went on a little ride. Normally Buzz likes to sit on the passenger seat but today he was happy being co-pilot. He decided to stomp on over to the driver seat and pull up to the steering wheel and take control. So I wonder what the cop would say when he pulled US over for crazy driving :)

This is the reason for buzz- this wedding.

Let me give you the scoop. Kelli and Whitney are good friends from college and I have gotten to know Whitney and Josh over the years. Well, Whitney's parents breed Bulldogs, the cutest ones at that. So what we did is a little swap. normally I wouldnt do that but it just happen we were looking for the cutest four legged animal and they wanted me to shoot their wedding, done and done.

So I shot their engagement session and and knew there wedding was going to really fun. I gave a little sneak peek a little bit ago and here is the rest.

This is Christine and Bill, possible the most understanding couple ever.

I unfortunately forgot my battery for the engagement shoot, a rookie move i know but it will never happen again. Luckily I also have the best wife ever who dropped everything to come save the day. But out of the chaos we still managed to have a great time and score some solid images. I really enjoy this picture cause I was peeking on the back of my camera just fell in love it form the very beginning, its just one of those things. Making some friend

Its kinda funny how people come and go through out peoples lives. well, Debra and her husband James are one of our new friends that have come into our our lives.

Debra is a wedding planner at Los Willows, where Kelli and I got married, and she made our special day the best. She wasnt a full blown wedding planner, just an assistant at the time, so we never really had a chance to meet, but that being said, her presence was still felt.

So the way our paths crossed again is through our other friends, Bobby and Lindsay Earle. I know Bobby cause he is an awesome wedding photographer and Lindsay is really good friends with Debra. crazy circle but now we are all friends :)

Anyways, Debra and James have 2 Bulldogs, Gracie and Tommy. Gracie came on over to play with Buzz and got him super tired. He slept so late, I got 2 nights of sleep in one.

Hotel Del- Yes PLEASE!!!

I had the awesome opportunity to second shoot the fabulous Bobby Earle at the gorgeous Hotel Del Coronado. The bride, Julia, was from Russia and Barry was Jewish and it made for a beautiful wedding! The reception was really fun cause half the speeches were in Russian and was really fun to listen. Luckily they someone translating or else i would have a clue what they were saying. Oh well, one good thing is that photos are photos, no matter what the language.

Livermore, part 2

The Epplers got married at Rios Lovell Winery in Livermore, CA and it was another hot one. I had a friend of mine, Aaron Hoops, second shoot with me and we had a good time.

So shooting this venue earlier this year is was fun going back and seeing how a different couple can give it a different feel. That is why I love my job, it always changes

South Coast Winery
This wedding was a fun one because I have known the bride's family for like 15 years. The fiesta was South Coast Winery in Temecula, Ca and was a terrific setting. The venue was really pretty but the food service was a little slow, by little slow, I mean terribly slow. Its all good. It was way fun. Plus my friend Aaron came the second shoot and he nailed it!!!!

So I like to post weddings as soon as I possibly can on the blog. This one took so long for me to get up here, not because I was procrastinating, but because the wife and I went on VACATION. I hope that is a valid excuse.
Anyways, this is Arlina and Chris's wedding in pretty Livermore, CA. These guys are so stinking in love, it was ridiculous. They did the first peek before and cried their eyeballs out and also at the ceremony, so double cry session. It was awesome. They also did something I wish I did at mine. They took a photo of themselves at the alter- AWESOME!!!!

Night on the water
I second shot for Deann again. It was a fun afternoon that started in a non air conditioned to a very comfortable boat ride in the bay of San Diego. It was pretty darn fun, I have never shot on a boat before. Enjoy!

La Habra
So was the hottest wedding I have ever shot. It must have been a million degrees, but it was all worth it. Jen and Grant were really really fun to shoot. We actually went into Vons to try and get some shots but that lasted about 30 seconds and we got 3 shots off before we got escorted out. Its all good though. It was a blast.

Santa Barbara

So this las Sunday I got to second shoot my friend, Josh Newton, and it was a blast. I got to shoot the guys and they were super fun and it was a GORGEOUS wedding back in the hills of Santa Barbara. note to self- get more weddings there. Salton Sea- thank you for being you
I threw this crazy, fun idea to Carolann and Chris to go do their engagement pictures at the fabulous Salton Sea. To my surprise they said yes!
So after the long drive, we finally arrived to abandoned buildings and drained pools. my wife was a little nervous but it was amazing. Carolann and Chris were fantastic to shoot and we had an amazing time. Well worth the time. Enjoy!

John and Lisa had their wedding during the day and it turned awesome. It was a the beautiful Pala Mesa Resort in Fallbrook. I have always drove by it but never actually checked out the grounds and was pleasantly surprised. Good times :)

Happy Birthday

Feb 2nd was Grandma Mayer's real birthday but we celebrated it last night, the 8th. It was a family fiesta with 35+ Mayers taking over the restaurant. I have awesome grandparents on both sides so I am double lucky. YES! there are 80 candles on the cake....

A good friend of mine, Jonah Maddox, who is a medic in the army, was able to come home for a few weeks form Afghanistan and took this hilarious picture.

Jingles the Goat was a gift to Jonah because he saved a kids life that got shot in the leg. It turned out that the kid's father was the leader of the local village and they gave he goat as a gift of gratitude. Jingles has a bad habit of smoking
